Research to improve THR/TKR outcomes - pain specialists views

We would like to invite you to take part in a study developing a pain science and exercise programme to support patients undergoing joint replacement surgery to be more active.

Despite well-established benefits of physical activity for patients with osteoarthritis awaiting joint replacement, physical activity levels in this patient group are low. People awaiting joint replacement often believe physical activity is dangerous and will further damage their joints because they experience pain. Pain science education helps people to understand more about what happens in the body when we feel pain. This can break down barriers to exercise and support people to feel more confident, increasing their activity levels and exercise.

The programme will seek to teach people about the science behind pain, and how to best deal with pain when exercising. This will be combined with a personalised exercise programme which will support people to safely increase their physical activity before surgery.

Who is running this research?

This study is being run by researchers at the University of Bristol Musculoskeletal Research Unit. You can find out more here: https://www.bristolbrc.nihr.ac.uk/research/research-projects/supporting-exercise-before-joint-replacement/

What we need from you

We are inviting a range of health professionals to take part in a telephone or video interview lasting approximately 40-60 minutes. This can be arranged for a time and date to suit you. We will ask you for your feedback on the pain science messaging, your experiences of working with patients with musculoskeletal pain, and your views on how best to support them to be more physically active.

What to do if you are interested

An information sheet with further details of the study is attached to this email. Please read this information and if you are interested in taking part please contact Katie Whale on katie.whale@bristol.ac.uk.
