Almost 1 in 3 adults in England live with an MSK condition. The new ARMA report shows many ICBs are not giving MSK conditions the attention it deserves. We think it is time to change this #MSKinequalities
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions encompass a range of health issues affecting the bones, joints, muscles, and spine. Musculoskeletal health is crucial for overall well-being and impacts various aspects of life such as work, learning, caregiving, travel, leisure, exercise, sports, and independent living.
In March 2024, the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA), of which the PPA is a member to this group, sent Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to the 42 Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in England. The purpose was to assess their leadership and strategic priorities for MSK services.
The key take-home message from the ARMA report:
· Nearly one in four ICBs reported having no designated MSK lead.
· Almost one in four ICBs were unable to outline their priorities for MSK services.
The ARMA report recommends that any ICB that has not explicitly discussed MSK services at a board meeting in the past year do so immediately. This serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of integrating MSK health into every ICB's strategic planning.
