Year published: 2013

A series of books based on the work of the Physiotherapy Pain Association and its study days is

being made available free to physiotherapy schools.  CSP member Philippa Tindle said: ‘We have 200 copies of the books that we want to donate to the 36 schools of physiotherapy.’

The multi-authored texts, which . rst appeared in print in 1998, are titled:

Whiplash: Science and Management. Fear

Avoidance Beliefs and Behaviour

Biopsychosocial Assessment and Management,

Relationships and Pain

Sympathetic nervous system and pain. Pain

management. Clinical E ectiveness

Placebo and nocebo. Pain management. Muscles

and pain.

Treatment. Communication. Return to Work.

Cognitive-behavioural. Pathophysiology

Louis Gi. ord, CSP fellow and editor of the books, said they cover the necessary clinical

skills and theory needed for physiotherapists to understand a ‘biopsychosocial’ approach to their

work. ‘There was a big pain revolution in physiotherapy in the late 1990s and early 2000s,

which brought a biopsychosocial perspective into the treatment and management of pain,’ he said.

‘But we are going back to our old ways of passive treatments and modalities, and this

needs to be rekindled.’
